i was just diagnosed with prostate cancer, and my urologist says i need treatment, he also says it is confined to the prostate gland. i am very confused about the different forms of treatment (brachytherapy, radiation therapy, prostatectomy.) i could use some advice on navigating all of this.

hi luke, i would be happy to walk you through the treatment options for those suffering from prostate cancer. essentially, brachytherapy is a type of radiation therapy that is commonly used as the first treatment for prostate cancer. the therapy places pellets about the size of a grain of rice into the prostate. for men with higher risks of cancer spreading, brachytherapy can be combined with external radiation. prostatectomy is a common surgery performed on men to try and cure prostate cancer if it has not spread outside the prostate gland. the main purpose of this surgery is to remove the prostate gland plus the tissue around it, including the seminal vesicles. im sure ytoure oncologist will walk you through these treatment options in mroe detail depending on the stage you are in.
