Title: help with cancer treatment for my wife
Post by: cancerhusband on September 21, 2018, 03:02:14 pm
My wife is set to get her first round of chemo early next week and she is very scared, largely because of the many side effects associated with this treatment. Can any people currently going through treatment tell me about their experiences with chemo and if the side effects were severe for them? I want to support my wife in the best way possible and offer her some input to try and alleviate the stress chemo is causing her.

That is awesome how you are really trying to be there for your wife. She definitely needs a strong support system to fight this cancer. Unfortunately with chemotherapy comes many side effects. Here is a link tthat I believe explains the side effects very well. https://www.cancer.org/treatment/treatments-and-side-effects/treatment-types/chemotherapy/chemotherapy-side-effects.html
Since the chemo is destroying good and bad cells you are at much higher risk for infection, so make sure your wife is always in the cleanest conditions, and always be attentive.

Hey Dominic, thanks for the advice. I will certainly take a look at the article. What kind of side effects did you or your loved one have?

My sister had experienced alot of the common side effects. The one that effected her the most mentally at first was the hair loss, but she eventually began to take pride in it which was a awesome thing to see. She was always feeling tired and nauseas, so we made sure we were a strong support team keeping her motivated and happy. Making sure your wife knows you and your family are there for her when she needs them will help alot. She also experienced the lack of concentration, so being patient is important as welll.

Hi Chris, I'm happy to say that although my wife went through some intense side effects, she is currently in remission and doing well so far. The main side effects she struggled with were extreme fatigue and nausea. To stop hair loss we actually used one of the scalp cooling caps we learned about in this article! https://www.cancerhealth.com/article/spare-hair-chemo She was able to keep most of her hair which made the rest of the side effects less upsetting for her. The oncologist also told us to be prepared for easy bruising/bleeding due to a low platelet count, but that wasn't too much of an issue, because my wife was almost always too tired to do much physical activity. I hope this helps.
