Title: do i have liver cancer
Post by: drivered on November 13, 2017, 10:02:44 am
last week i went to the emergency room with stomach pain. they ran a ton of tests and found i need my appendiz out. but they also found i had a tumor on one of my kidneys. the er doc said i would need my kidney removed asap but the appendix guy said the kidney could wait. lets get that appendix out.

so now i'm home resting after the surgery and starting research kidney tumors. are they always cancer? do i have to have the entire kidney removed? how fast do i need to do it all?

appreciate any help as i'm freakin out here.

I'm not a medical professional, but it sounds like you'll want to start by seeing your doctor, who can run tests on your system and the tumor specifically. From there, you all can decide on a course of action, depending on results. Here's some more info: https://www.cancerhealth.com/basics/health-basics/kidney-cancer

The American Cancer Society also recommend seeing your doctor for a proper diagnosis (https://www.cancer.org/cancer/kidney-cancer/detection-diagnosis-staging/how-diagnosed.html). Plus, consulting with your doctor about your tumor may ease your mind a little. It's easy to go down a self-diagnosis rabbit hole (which we've all done, yikes), and you don't need the extra stress while you're healing from appendix surgery.

Good luck, and feel better.

I had a friend in a similar situation. He was told it was 80% chance of being cancer and only 20% of being malignant. They couldn't figure out which it was until after it was removed. This all happened about 7 years ago. He got lucky and it was benign.

He also said don't let them take the entire kidney. There are doctors who can just remove the tumor and leave a bunch of your kidney. In his case they saved 75% of the kidney. He had it done at Sloan Kettering. He first went to doctors in NJ and they all told him the whole kidney had to come out.

It sounds like there's no need to make a hasty decision, now that the appendix surgery is done. Talk to your doctor, and maybe get a second opinion. There may be treatments than can preserve your kidney -- once it's gone, you can never get it back!

thanks all for the feedback and support. not happy about my chances of this thing not being cancer. my wife's been all over finding doctors to talk to so i'll defenitely talk to more than one. fingers crossed they can get the tumor without taking my whole kidney. and that this thing isn't cancer  >:(
